Directions and Onion Peels

In 2022, I felt a shift. I couldn't describe it, but felt it in my bones. It was one of those times where perception unravels and begins to build back up again in a slightly different construction. What direction would impending changes take? How would those changes be revealed in my art?

Growth and change are a part of life. Whenever changes occur in an artist's life, art follows along...modifying, shifting.

A hint of changes to come began with a need to dig deeper into myself. Moving past the surface of trying this technique or that technique, I had to understand me. I took a few months living with the uncomfortable state of being slightly off-balance; needing but not knowing. Surprisingly, a chance plein air invitation opened a window. One of the artists participating in the paint group happened to be an Enneagram coach. Since I had no idea what Enneagram was, my curiosity was piqued. I began a deep dive into its ancient method of describing the human psyche, based on nine interconnected and distinct personality types. This led to a journey of unpacking who I am,  identifying and removing old, fear-based coping methods, and building a practice of meditation in my life.

As I continue to work through peeling back the onion layers of behaviors, deep-seated beliefs, and relationship expectations, I reach further into my authentic self. The purpose of this is to see beliefs or behaviors that, while they once served me, serve me no longer, with the hopes of living a more present, enriched life, and appreciating, really living in, each relationship and each moment (if I can control that monkey mind of mine).

As a result, my artwork trails along behind me, reflecting inner work. As I begin, artistically, to speak more authentically, I see a change in my artwork. Peace is still there, yes, but ENERGY is vibrating from my fingers in a big way. Shapes are chunkier, with harder edges as I explore power, energy, depth, expanse, and release. My whole body is involved in each stroke. Distilled forms, gestures, layers, history, quiet areas, energetic areas, and freedom. These are words that come to mind with the changes I see and feel.

I believe what is unfolding in my artwork is a renewed sense of focus and energy. I continue to concentrate my efforts on hearing, then translating my inner voice in connection to the land. The impact our surroundings have on us and our inner well being, how it effects interactions in our relationships to ourselves and others, is my daily exploration.

I'm so very excited to share new work resulting from these shifting perceptions. Hopefully the artwork will resonate with you as well.

Pop me a line and let me know your thoughts, or if you are curious as to what self-help books I'm reading. :)

Thanks once again for reading. Embrace love and peace when they knock on your door.

~Sarah

Beautiful piece and relatable, thank you. I used to think I needed to have one -style” of artwork but finally feel more free in exploring. Yes, what books are you reading?

I would love to know which books have help "release and discover". I am trying to discover my energy and help it come out but I get tucked away in the everyday. I do feed off other's energy...maybe that is why I have taken so many classes from you! Joy is there and I have a quiet joy in my very fortunate life!

Hi Sarah! I loved this story of exploration and change. I, too, was introduced to Enneagrams just a few weeks ago here in Telluride where you had a wonderful landscapes workshop last June. I love the new chunkier shapes and hard edges of your beautiful colors. Please do let us know the self-help books you're reading. Turns out I am a Nine in the Enneagram chart—the peacemaker. Who knew? Cheers! Denise

These paintings are beyond creative. They do not look like watercolor however. Are they acrylic? I also struggle with finding myself in my art. I feel like I flounder.

Hi Michele! Thank you! While it is a goal to have a "style", experimentation and play are what make your artwork YOU. The only way you can find YOU is to paint and play with different techniques, genres, mediums, etc. After you begin to narrow down who you are, artistically speaking, your paintings will still evolve and change subtly over time. Enjoy the process. It is so stinking FUN!! Bookwise: The Buddhist Enneagram, by Susan Piver (Short, easy to read, and to the point) The Wisdom of the Enneagram, by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson (looonnng, but informational) You are a Badass, by Jen Sincero (LOVED this one!) Maybe You Should Talk to Someone, by Lori Gottlieb (LOVED this one, too!) Neuro Dharma, by Rich Hanson (great book on how meditation changes the neurology of the brain) Typography (podcast ) The Road Back to You, Ian Cron (great, informative, short, easy read, helpful) As a side note: Many Enneagram models are based in the church, but you can ignore that part if it feels weird. The personality stuff is still so spot on.

Hi Anita! Yay! You found the post! Thanks for commenting. This platform is a little awkward, as I have to enter a comment on my own page instead of hit "reply" to your comment. Strange, but ah well. I agree. That is what I have to work with most, is my monkey mind...the thing just won't shut off! That and those weird things that I say to myself that aren't true. My negative reoccurring bias is "I'm not enough". Good grief. Eyeroll! Books listed in my reply to Michelle's comment. Let me know if you get any and what you think! XO

Hi Denise!! Oh we have to talk! I first tested as a 5, then a 9, then a 7, finally a 3, LOL!!! Three is my home, I believe. Hahaha. Will you be taking the workshop in Telluride in June? Would be fun to meet up, even so!

Hi Donna! Thank you for your comment. Yes, these paintings are all acrylic on panel. I work in acrylic, watercolor, and gouache, all watermedia. All the work on my profile is acrylic unless otherwise stated. That is the medium I use for the galleries, as I don't have to frame behind glass. Floundering is what artists do best, don't you know! :) You are right there with plenty of company. The best advise I can give is just paint, paint, paint! Take workshops, or online courses to speed up the process, but honestly, I STILL flounder. Not one of us is "finished". I still learn every single day. And, something that works one day might not work another! BUT! Part of the process is just enjoying the ride and giving it all you've got. Keep me posted on how it goes!

Denise, BTW, I posted a few of my favorite reads in my comment to Michelle. Let me know if you read any and what you think!

Well said Sarah. I noticed the change in your art and it is interesting to read the details behind it!

Thank you for posting the books. I just did an enneagram from an online source. I need to explore this more but I am a strong 1 (not a surprise). Mostly what I have found in exploring my painting is how much I suppress my emotions and how difficult they are to channel and explore. Retiring from being a health care provider has helped me move to a move creative space (though shedding the structure of that career continues to be had to do). I lost my older sister 2 years ago and have found such a disconnect with my side of the family since then. I remain incredibly grateful for my husband, son, and my husband's family. I also am so grateful that nature and being outside brings such peace and joy. Thanks for opening some doors for exploration. Thanks for being open with your journey. I remain very grateful also for meeting you in Bend at the Sagebrusher's workshop not quite a year ago.

Hi John! Thanks for responding and finding my blog! It has been frustrating, exciting, puzzling, astounding journey...as always!! :)

Anita...So sorry to hear you have lost your sister. Sending hugs your way. I, too, am grateful for meeting you. I can't wait for more conversations like this one...in person...in ITALY! Or, perhaps if you come to Bend again, we can grab a bite or go for a hike. XOXO

Great composition, great value contrasts, great color contrasts/emphases, great energy and emotional content...inspiring! My 'self help' book is the NT and deep dives into the 'hyper link' shift into a very different place that phrases and concepts can take one. Essential to 'make it your own' just like painting is a personal translation of what we see mixed with active imagination. Love, Faith, Hope....but Love is [the most challenging! especially 'self love'...how can we love others unless we learn to love ourselves?] the greatest. Unconditional Love. 2 words that make an Alice rabbit hole in the sky. Love received [which displaces all the negatives, past, present, future] bestows perfect 'righteousness' [= intentional, active love] which bestows perfect, intimate, caring beyond understanding, relationship! and I'm still in the 'foyer'! {;^)
