In 2021, my husband and I moved from downtown Bend, Oregon to a five-acre plot of land in rural Terrebonne, Oregon, with huge views of the distant Cascade Mountains. I knew it would alter my art in some way. Time would reveal just how.

Now in 2023, almost two years later, as I paint many pieces of work for my upcoming shows (one at Clearwater Gallery in Sisters and the other at Marmot Art Space in Spokane), I find myself painting skies. Big skies.

It's easy to understand why. Each morning, distant mountain vistas welcome me with their pink edges as soft clouds whisper of nighttime wanderings. When I walk to the rim, skies move with altering moods of storms coming and storms passed. Every afternoon, as I tend to the yard, blue skies sing with expansive gestures and dancing thunderheads.

It's funny how our minds subconsciously store information and ideas without our really knowing it. In my case, as I embrace a new home, daily sights of large skies stir around in my brain and come out as paintings.
